IATA Standard requirement of pet's crate

 

Prior to purchasing, It is important you purchase the right sized container for your 
pet. Airlines use the following indications to ensure the animal has enough space 
to turn about normally while standing, to stand and sit erect, and to lie in a 
natural position. 
 
For your pet's crate safety and comfort and to fulfill regulations, your pet's crate 
must be correctly prepared for shipment. Dog/cat must be placed in a container 
that has enough space to turn about normally while standing, to stand and sit 
erect and to lie in a natural position.
 
To determine the correct kennel dimensions
 
• The kennel length is the distance from the root of tail to tip of nose plus half 
  the elbow to ground measurement;
 
• The kennel width is twice the width of the widest point.
 
• The kennel height is the distance from floor to tip of ears;
 
• The ventilation openings must be small enough so that paws/nose cannot 
  protrude outside the container.
 
• For snub-nosed dogs, one kennel size bigger than usual is required to 
  prevent breathing problems.
 
• Kennel must be made of rigid plastic with a built-in metal door. (Wooden 
  kennels and kennels with plastic doors are not permitted.) It must be strong 
  enough to protect your pet during transport,be secure enough to contain it 
  and have sufficient ventilation on all four sides, to ensure the air quality
  in the container will not deteriorate.
 
• The door lock must be secure in such a manner that it will not open accidentally 
  or your pet cannot open it during handling and transport, but no padlocks 
  may be used. Door hinges and locking pins must extend beyond the horizontal 
  extrusions above and below the opening by at least 1.6 cm (5.8 in). Your pet's
  nose and paws should not be able to fit through any ventilation opening or
  door mesh.
 
• Wheels must be removed.
 
• The kennel must have two empty dishes attached, or a single dish with 2 
  compartments for food and water, accessible without opening the kennel door.
